American singer-songwriter, composer and guitarist Dickey Betts, best known as a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, was born and raised in Florida. He grew up in a naturally musical family, listening to bluegrass and country, and started playing instruments at age 5, moving on to the guitar as he matured. He played in Rock bands growing up, but found himself in the Allman Brothers Band in 1969. Following the death of lead singer Duane Allman, Betts took over the role of sole guitarist, heavily contributing to the singing as well. He was the writer and singer of some of the band's main hits, such as "Ramblin' Man" and "Jessica". Betts pursued a solo career during the band's hiatus in the late 1970s, releasing an album of his own before returning to the Allman Brothers Band for a reunion that lasted up until 1982. Betts formed a new group, Betts, Hall, Leavell and Trucks, that lasted up until 1984. A new Allman Band reunion occurred in 1989, and the group went on to release three acclaimed studio albums before Betts' official departure in 2000, due to issues with substance abuse. He has since reformed his project Dickey Betts Band and appeared in the TV special "Rock & Roll Fantasy Camp" (TLC, 2005-06), while his songs were featured in several movies, such as "Big Fish" (2003), "Incendiary" (2008) and "The Holdovers" (2023). Dickey Betts died on April 18, 2024 in Sarasota, FL at the age of 80.
