Critics Consensus

It may not rank with Scorsese's best work, but Shutter Island's gleefully unapologetic genre thrills represent the director at his most unrestrained.

It's not a serious film and it's not even an especially suspenseful film but it is fun, in a Dr Caligari sort of way. Go to Full Review

A twisted psychological thriller that leaves you guessing until the very end, Shutter Island is yet another fantastic collaboration between DiCaprio (giving another pitch-perfect and near heartbreaking performance) and director Martin Scorsese. Go to Full Review

Tyler H @TylerHotel1 1d Would give this movie 5 stars but the public connotation after consuming this movie since its release has managed to diminish such an excellent concept, with exceptional foresight and individual roles. See more Cenny 4 @KenTan 2d Very thrilling and haunting film, especially the ending reveal. I think there were hints throughout the movie that he was the topmost dangerous criminal, but his insanity kept him from the truth. I don’t think there are many interpretations to be analyzed from this movie; it is just pure psychological horror . It makes you question what insanity is and what human minds are capable of. A scary thought. But beyond the psychology, the emotional notes of this story is felt deeply. The first hit is when teddy realises that his wife has gone insane and killed all 3 of their children, and in a fit of horror, guilt, disappointment, anger, killed his wife. He really blames himself for not getting her help thus leading to this very unfortunate incident, and after this, his brain blocks this traumatizing incident from himself, and creates this new alter ego where this doesn’t happen at all. I think this film is also educational, so seek help even for mental injuries! See more Bhavy P @bhavy838 3d LeonardoDiCaprio’s performance was absolutely amazing. No other actor could’ve fulfilled the role better than him. As well as a lot of foreshadowing in the beginning, the twist and the end was perfect and it left you guessing until the last moment very very thought-provoking and it made you feel like you’re in your own experiment and that you were being experimented on and then it’s like what if you are in your own experiment and everybody around you is just an actor or what if you’re in a dream and you’re just dreaming and it’s gonna be time for you to wake up or like him you’re in this insane role-play and you did something really bad so you make up a regular ordinary in your life and until you get to one part of life, you never know crazy movie See more Ace R @dragoneca2 4d A very intense movie. This movie will keep you constantly wondering what is truth, and what is insanity. Just when you think you know who the good guy is, you start thinking that maybe you are wrong. The ending will surprise you. I recommend that you see this movie. 🙂 See more Tyler M @tyler99darien Aug 13 The acting was so good through out and the ending was a real mind twist it keeps you into it the whole time See more Veerendra A @VeerAgale Aug 5 Finally watched Shutter Island this year, and it completely lived up to the hype. The mystery kept me hooked from start to finish, the atmosphere was incredibly tense, and every twist made me rethink what I had just seen. The performances were outstanding, and it's the kind of movie that stays with you long after the credits roll. Definitely one of the most memorable psychological thrillers I've watched.
