Clever from the opening scene to the closing credits, 'Appropiate Behavior', written, directed, and starring newcomer Desiree Akhavan is the best film from a novice filmmaker in quite some time. Akhaven has a Seinfeld-esque quality to her humor and Baumbacian feel to her directing. The film is not linear. Even the flashbacks are not in order, but the movie is seamless in telling a story and transitioning from past to present.
Akhavan is able to handle complex issues delicately. From dating to sexuality to exploring boundaries, 'Appropriate Behavior' is not for the closed-minded or the conservative. Films of this nature have been done, yet the ones that stand out are unique. This is a masterpiece from start to finish. Final Score 9.3/10

Hillarious and edgy.

Great movie, Akhavan is very funny. It was refreshing to see representation so normalized. Definitely would recommend.

I wished I could say I liked this movie, but found it entirely too scattered and endless

Naturally glides between subtle comedy and serious sexuality themes on the back of terrific natural writing and intimate photography.

good tale of self-discovery and acceptance

Found it a crashing self-involved bore. The main character (and director) gave out all her lines in a dull monotone, since she seems incapable of acting. And why do all indie films use the same music that sounds worse than the stuff on your average elevator, or that some amateur made up by experimenting in their garage?

You would think a director of color would have people of color in her film. This film beside her family involved all white - flat , one dimensional characters. They argued about nothing and more than anything was a mockery of the true up and downs, ins and outs of queer relationships .

One of those films that is more hip than you are and likes to remind you of it, where everyone talks in a witty monotone as if they were robots built by Diablo Cody. BONUS: If you watch with captions, at one point "(zombie flatulence)" will be a thing.

This movie brings self-absorption to a new level.

A very funny and chill movie for star and also writer director, Desiree Akhavan. The story was very interesting and the her acting was very good. The dialogue and style reminds me of Lena Dunham. This movie feels episodes of the HBO show "Girls".

Fast, perhaps a bit ýber-smart, lovable & human movie.

I think my viewing was strongly hindered by a very low streaming quality, but in any case its an indie-comedy that isnt all that funny, but interesting nonetheless.

The debut film for writer/director/star Desiree Akhavan (whom you might have caught on this week's Girls), is a very astute picture that's clearly personal, yet undeniably universal as well. Told in a non-chronological fashion, the film carries a mystique to it that separates it from other 20-something-Brooklyn films, yet it also contains plenty of the bawdy humor and quirky attitude that's to be expect from Akhavan's generation. It's views onto sexuality, race, and romance are potent as well, even if the film chooses to not have too much resolution in it by the time the credits role. Approriate Behavior is a superb debut film all around, and suggests even better things to come from the young Akhavan.

A new twist on the coming out story with an Iranian Lesbian and her strict family. This was fun sassy brave and intelligent and a must for all the fans of Girls as it reminded me of this a lot. The writer director and star is a major new find
