I was quite taken with the idea of the movie, but it really fails to live up to its potential. Good stuff from Hema Malini (like Hema is ever bad) and Om Puri (as the voice of tradition), and I would walk through fire for Rani Mukherjee's smile. But overall . . . it is pretty nonsensical, and definitely would have benefited from someone going, "hey, wait a minute" during the production. Or before the production. (Like, "hey, wait a minute, these songs don't actually use a piano so maybe he shouldn't be sitting at one.") Or, for that matter, after the production. It has good intentions, but it could have been a very, very cool movie and it ends up totally schmaltzy and basically without charm.
