The plot may be hard to find and the acting may be monotone but the cinematography and psychological aspect of the film is stunning. Honestly I was shocked at the negative reviews this film got but after reading them its obvious this film was recently discovered by most during the recent retro resurgence. Keep in mind this is an inde film from 2010 that wasn’t chasing the 2020s trendy vibes. Give it a chance and accept its slow and weird. They’re not all created equal and if you don’t have a clear idea of what you’re going for your movie ends up formless, directionless and dull. The set up had me intrigued and I was keen to see where it was going to go. Turns out, it wasn’t really going anywhere, and it did so very slowly. There are solid minutes of characters walking slowly along corridors lit by, but the looks of it, Dario Argento. I was pretty much checked out. The story is paper thin, so its obvious the director’s mind was more focused on imagery than narrative. Credit to him, the imagery is incredible, but not enough reason is given for us to put up with it. I’m glad the director would go on to make Mandy, a vast improvement on his directorial debut, which seems more concerned with attracting arthouse praise than being an entertaining film.
