I enjoyed this one and the story it told, despite the critics poor rating. Foster & Howard do a good job of keeping you engaged
The story is intense and Foster is a treat to watch. A fantastic performance.

Satisfying the minimum character requirement
The New York tourist board can't be thrilled about this movie, in which a violent crime apparently happens every night and all the streets are dark and foreboding.
Jodie Foster does Charles Bronson (Death Wish), but of course, being a female, she puts a little different spin on it. She plays Erica Bain, a low-key New York radio talk show host who recites Emily Dickinson and D.H. Lawrence.
She and her fiance are out walking their dog one night, and three hoods jump them and beat them, killing the fiance.
After recuperating from her injuries, Erica tries to buy a gun in a shop, but she can't deal with the 30-day licensing period. Outside the shop, a street guy sells her a handgun, and off she goes. In the next couple of weeks, she blows away a violent robber in a store, two hoods hassling a young man in a subway car, a slimy guy who kidnapped a whore, and a scumbag who killed his wife and walked on a technicality.
What differentiates The Brave One from the scores of other revenge films is the relationship between Erica and Mercer (Terrence Howard), the detective who is investing the vigilante shootings. He comes to suspect Erica through a couple of very convenient coincidences, and they develop a kind of suspicious friendship. Their scenes together are interesting enough to keep you watching.
The climactic scene is totally improbable, but it will please revenge freaks.
The camera work is annoying, with lots of tilted angles and rotating shots. There is a brief love scene early in the film with a whining pop singer on the soundtrack doing a moronic song (Why do directors feel compelled do this?). The film concludes with more insipid pop music as Erica walks away from the camera.
There's nothing new here, but at least Foster and Howard are good enough actors to keep our attention.
A mediocre film, a generous 2 stars for the protagonists.
It's totally just Death Wish but with a girl. Totally savage insanity, revenge, etc. If you liked any of the Death Wish movies, you'll probably like this one as well. It's worth watching if that's your thing. Otherwise I think it will just upset you.
It has it's moments. A revenge movie that somehow manages to be 2 hours long. Average at points. Very good sound effects through out the movie. Some scenes that carry a big emotional tone that does engage well with the audience. The one weak point is that crime conveniently keeps just popping up around her, over and over again. Worth a watch if you a fan of revenge movies.
A cat and mouse pursuit that gets to the heart of the nature of investigation and how it changes those who seek answers, between an endangered radio reporter and a disillusioned police detective, both knowing what constitutes a crime and how to avoid detection, while still losing their innocence when faced with truth, as the truth always does to people. Albeit at the expense of stereotypes and dropped story points, perhaps.
Nicely paced western, period piece set in mid nineteenth century Ireland. Actors all make the revenge plot easy to digest, and genuine empathy for the anti hero was felt from the first act through the credits.
I liked this one Jodie Foster gave one good performance. It was almost similar to Charles Bronson " Death Wish " of taking revenge on their own hands, of course this time was a female leading role, the film was good it caught my attention and it delivered a good movie. So for this being a good solid film and seeing a good solid plot and seeing how the movie developed with its leading actress in Jodie Foster, I give ' The Brave One " B-.
