Critic Reviews for But Always
It's possible that there's a worse movie tangentially related to 9-11 than But Always, though I don't advise seeking one out.
"But Always" deserves every bit of scorn heaped upon it.
Bathed in golden sunlight and often accompanied by a treacly piano score, Anran and Zhao Yongyuan make eyes longingly, but they don't connect in anything but the most superficial way.
Unfortunately, writer-director Snow Zou lays on the treacle - and the tragedy - with such a heavy hand it sucks all the air out of the potentially poignant story.
While most of "But Always" takes place in New York City, the Chinese drama's blend of sentimentality and romantic fatalism is very Asian.
