In the class-obsessed and religiously divided United Kingdom of the early 1920s, two determined young runners train for the 1924 Paris Olympics. Eric Liddell (Ian Charleson), a devout Christian born to Scottish missionaries in China, sees running as part of his worship of God's glory and refuses to train or compete on the Sabbath. Harold Abrahams (Ben Cross) overcomes anti-Semitism and class bias, but neglects his beloved sweetheart Sybil (Alice Krige) in his single-minded quest.

The university scenes in England are witty and good-natured, with Sir John Gielgud's refined performance adding a nice touch. The scenes in Scotland offer a refreshing change of pace. While some may view it as a stuffy costume drama, the film's unconventional form, refinement, and pitch-perfect performances make it stand out. The ending is particularly sublime, with memorable music that will be remembered for a lifetime.

Aside from Vangelis’s iconic theme, there’s little here that leaves a lasting impression, the combination of classical British accents and a slow, subdued narrative is practically tailor-made for inducing sleep.
