Movie Info

A beautiful Swiss businesswoman leaves her husband for a powerful Masai warrior, whose intense jealousy eventually threatens to destroy their relationship. Corrine was spending two weeks in Kenya with her husband when she fell in love with the handsome Lketinga, whose tribal lifestyle stood in stark contrast to her urban upbringing. Despite the fact that he is illiterate and the two can barely communicate, Lketinga and Corrine soon wed. Afflicted with malaria and hepatitis, Corrine does her best to adjust to life among the Masai people, and even runs a grocery store in order to support her new community. Shortly after Corrine becomes a mother, however, Lketinga grows increasingly suspicious and domineering. Eventually, the realization that she and her husband are no longer in love prompts Corrine to gather her daughter, pack and pack their bags for a permanent vacation in Switzerland. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

  • Love stories don't get any more unusual than this.

  • The film makes excellent use of its African locations, presenting the continent in all its beauty and mystery.

  • O filme parece esperar que compartilhemos de seu julgamento preconceituoso e aplaudamos o veredicto de que, apenas por serem quem são, Lemalian e seus conterrâneos não têm quaisquer direitos e merecem nosso desprezo incondicional.

  • The film is pretty, predictable and far too long ...

  • There is so much foolishness committed in the name of lust, but few as ill conceived as that expressed in "The White Masai."

  • Plodding, stolid German adaptation of best-selling book fails to engage with any of the complexities of its subject but the scenery is beautiful.

DIE WEISSE MASSAI (2005) Directed by Hermine Huntgeburth. Based on the autobiog by Corinne Hofmann. A story of naivete & ignorance. I saw a long i/view with Carola Hofmann at the time of her autobiog release, & was struck by what a very odd her personality she was. Having seen the film, my initial impressions are only compounded. She professed love for a man with whom she could not communicate on any deep or significant level, a man who never once said that he loved her & who already had several other wives at home. She subjected herself to a life of subjugation, deprivation, humiliation, isolation & danger, & was not even the adventurous, wanderlust-type of spirit who would view all of this as an exotic chapter in her life to explain her behaviour. If I had not seen her speaking in person, I would have been baffled. As it is, I am left with the impression that she has significant personality issues, with an intense need for self-punishment. Perhaps a book/film exploring these issues would have been more interesting. Well-written, filmed & acted (&, so, gets 3 stars), but ultimately unsatisfying & unbelievable (yes, even though it is based on true events!) ***3 out of 5 stars***

I could never quite decide if this woman was really brave or really stupid, but anyhow, it was certainly compelling viewing!
