El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie

Critics Consensus

Entertaining if not essential, El Camino adds a satisfying belated coda to the Breaking Bad story -- led by a career-best performance from Aaron Paul.

  • If you enjoyed the original series and respect Gilligan's commitment to giving Jesse a send off, you'll probably get a lot out of this extra two hours of screen time.

  • Suspenseful, funny, emotional and endlessly surprising, El Camino reminds us why we love Breaking Bad.

  • There's nothing about El Camino that is essential; while it won't tarnish your memories of the original series, it won't reframe or enhance them, either. It's a nice ride with some old friends. Sometimes, that's just enough.

  • For fans of the show who know these characters, that's a welcome conclusion for a story we didn't even know we missed until Vince Gilligan showed it to us.

  • It's really well shot, really well acted, and it's constantly engaging.

  • It's fun to see these characters again and be back in this world, but "Better Call Saul" does exactly that in a substantive manner. El Camino is saddled with a hollow center.

Audience Reviews for El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie

Vince Gilligan loves the characters and world he created for his hit AMC series Breaking Bad. And, we're the better for it. He's taken us back to the days after the Breaking Bad finale so we can learn what happened to Jesse Pinkman. Gilligan has a mature and measured filmmaking voice. El Camino is simply an addendum to the Breaking Bad book.

Breaking Bad was a show that broke the standard storytelling Tv mould and delivered in my opinion, the best Tv show. This film plays out like an Epilogue and is not an essential part of the storyline. When we last left Jesse he was fleeing from the captivity scene and looked promising, but that would not be the case. The film picks up immediately and we are once again in the Breaking Bad world. This film is an incredible addition to the series, and in a world where filmmakers take liberties with storytelling, this actually has a reason to exist. Solid Netflix film and further evidence they are beginning to break the mould on the movie originals. Glad to see Breaking Bad back and another film down the line wouldn't hurt either. 11/10/2019

A solid entry to the Breaking Bad-verse. Aaron Paul is great per usual and Gilligan more than justifies the movie's existence by providing the right kind of ending for this character.
