Y B @RT09008921 Aug 14 Ever After is my go-to comfort movie —a cinematic refuge that blends genuine warmth with a healthy dose of emotional upheaval. I dare anyone to watch it once without succumbing to tears of joy or sorrow. When the demands of reality become tiresome, I retreat under a blanket with salted caramel ice cream and allow this film to quietly affirm that fairy tales, while no solution, are all we need sometimes. Be warned! This movie made me buy and read the torturous pages of Thomas More’s Utopia. The text began with philosophical intrigue and some wit but quickly descended into an ode to the supposed virtues of relentless, joyless austerity. Apparently, sixteenth-century philosophers never discovered the value of narrative comfort—an oversight for which I remain quietly grateful. I loved all the actors, they were so expressive and felt so human, which is so refreshing to me nowadays. The stepmother seemingly having had genuine feelings for her father was such a nice thing to add because it makes her feel more human compared to a basic fairytale villain, but it also doesn't excuse or try to explain why she's evil either. She's allowed both depth and genuine cruelty. I was a bit confused about how she was not considered a noble in rank even if she wasn't treated like one, would have loved that explained a bit, but honestly, that being the one flaw I ever notice is so small. I love the multiple lessons this actually has, for example, she challenges his views of people he's stereotyped, surprised me since this movie is fairly old! Then there are also lessons about forced love and genuine love, you get to understand both sides when the Prince feels betrayed and lashes out. This movie has made anyone I watch it with cry. See more Tony N @PugaFelix Jun 16 We saw this on the big screen for the first time. We LOVED it. It was so well done with beautiful sets/scenery and marvelous acting from all concerned. Barrymore carried off her part so well as did the actor playing the Prince. They worked so well today. The dialogue was witty and intelligent. One surprise was Melanie Lynskey. Although she was in the background as the second step sister, she played her part so well as you see her personality emerge throughout the film. If you've never seen it do. If you have, see it again!
