Critics Consensus

Fahrenheit 451 fails to burn as brightly as its classic source material, opting for slickly mundane smoke-blowing over hard-hitting topical edge.

When fake news can affect real elections, there is no better time to consider the lessons of this modernized "Fahrenheit 451." Go to Full Review

HBO's Fahrenheit 451 is horrifically beautiful. It feels both divorced from and intrinsically tied to its source material, the 1953 dystopian novel by Ray Bradbury. Go to Full Review

Bahrani's heavy-handedness robs Fahrenheit 451 of its potency, which is unfortunate, as Bradbury's story proves achingly imperative today by reflecting how governments instill control. Go to Full Review

Doug D @RT61707944 6d (Some reveals included here...) I used to teach Fahrenheit 451 to 7th graders (not a grade I recommend for the book), and I showed them pieces of the 1960s version of the film. It was terrible, and I fully believed a modern version would have to be an improvement. I was wrong. Where the earlier version was primitive and clunky, this one became polished. But it traded core aspects of the novel for face-palm-about-faces that made the new movie impossible to accept. Like Clarisse being an informant. And Beatty killing Montag instead of the other way around. And paper books already being pretty much extinct in favor of digital versions. Michael B. Jordan is a bona fide star, and Michael Shannon is one of the best villains in Hollywood. But the basic plot and screenplay of this movie were beyond terrible. If I ever teach F451 again, I'll just skip the movie comparison part of the curriculum entirely. I'd rather not go there than expose students to this dung-heap of a movie. See more Blake- N @PBSAniDom May 12 "Fahrenheit 451" (HBO) was, unfortunately, an awful viewing experience for me. I went in expecting a thoughtful modern take on a classic story, but it never really clicked. The pacing feels uneven and the characters don’t get enough depth to make the drama engaging. It often feels like it’s rushing through important ideas without letting them land. Even with HBO’s production backing, the atmosphere and tension never fully come together. It looks fine on the surface, but it lacks impact and emotional weight. In the end, it just didn’t work for me and felt like a missed opportunity for such strong source material. I’d rate it a 2/10. Unbelievably incomprehensible, poorly directed, and so boring that I fell asleep halfway trough after drinking two Red Bulls.
