Fantasy Island Reviews

By the time this "Fantasy Island" arrives at its gallingly stupid final twist, you'll be dying to go home.

'This place doesn't suck,' someone observes early on. If only.

The biggest shock of this new movie re-imagination is that it makes the original seem fresh and smart by comparison.

Contrived and loony, it feels like someone planted about a half-dozen different scripts all over this Fantasy Island.

If crimes against cinema merited prosecution, Blumhouse's Fantasy Island would go directly to death row. The only scary thing about this wussified, fright-free horrorshow is that it wants to spawn sequels. Stop it before it kills again.
February 14, 2020
The whole thing is completely nonsensical, even by the standards of what one might reasonably expect from a Fantasy Island movie.

Just wretchedly unenjoyable.

Granted, one person's fantasy can easily be another's nightmare, but in this case, the likely effect on an even moderately discriminating viewer will merely be a nagging headache.

The scares aren't particularly scary, the lessons aren't particularly compelling, and the ultimate resolution takes far too long to arrive at a conclusion that's far too pat.

Four intertwining fantasies, four stories' worth of lame ideas, poorly executed. Call it "De-Plane Crash." Call it "The Island of Dr. No-Thank-You." Call it "Worstworld."Call it "The Butterfly Effect," with a dead butterfly and no effect.

This, really, is what happens when you take all the wrong lessons out of film school.

If this new movie were a pilot for a TV reboot, it would come off as overwrought and underwritten but still possibly on the right track for a revived anthology series. As a movie, those flaws are magnified to the size of the silver screen.

Thriller framework aside, Fantasy Island probably works best as a comedy. At least when it's not trying to be one.

If this were the feature-length pilot episode for some cheap reboot on a streaming service - which is what it feels like - a generous viewer might half-heartedly agree to tune in next week and see if things get more interesting.
February 14, 2020
The movie can only be classified as something truly terrible, escaping any other categorization that would make it resemble an actual film.

[A]lthough by the end, as certain characters are brought back to life and others are turned into "black-eyed zombies," audiences will most likely be wishing they'd bought a ticket to another movie.

There's a degree of strain and tedium in the effort to convince us the story ultimately makes sense. Perhaps Wadlow's next project, Magic 8-Ball, will be his breakthrough. For the moment, however, his fantasy of making a good movie remains unfulfilled.
