11/20/2010 Barbara K. Lee's documentary exposes the different cultural perspectives about lesbianism from the standpoint of both men and women and how the anatomy of male and female sexuality influences the subject as well as the impact of the media on the issue. "Girls Kissing" shows that what excites males about lesbians differs from what turns on women about lesbians. Relying on several interviews with porn stars, "Penthouse" photographers, and social critics, this 68 minute film amounts to an introductory look at the subject. Lee inserts some shots of casual female frontal nudity but she doesn't use these images strictly to arouse sexual responses so that "Girls Kissing" becomes more about visual pornography than about the origins of lesbianism. In other words, the documentary isn't an excuse to show naked women cavorting with each other to arouse the audience. Some of the female porno stars say that lesbians are born more often that made. Although the subject matter is risque, it is never out-and-out pornographic. None of the people interviewed are strictly medical personnel so the documentary lacks depth.
