In the Chicago offices of Promethium Pharmaceuticals, co-presidents Richard Rusk (Joel Edgerton) and Elaine Markinson (Charlize Theron) receive a call from a company employee, Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo), who claims he has been kidnapped in Mexico and that his abductors are demanding a ransom of five million US dollars. One day earlier, Harold, Richard, and Elaine arrive in Mexico where they meet Sanchez, head of Promethium's Mexico plant. Unbeknownst to Harold, it is revealed that Sanchez has been selling Promethium's latest product, medical marijuana in the shape of a pill, to a Mexican cartel. Promethium has decided to cut them off to avoid harming their upcoming merger. Later that evening, as Richard, Elaine and Harold have dinner, Harold secretly records Richard's and Elaine's conversations while he is away from the table. He learns from the recording the merger plans, which would result in Harold losing his job. That night, he also discovers that his wife is having an affair and wants a divorce. Sanchez informs cartel leader Villegas about them getting cut off by Promethium; Villegas maims Sanchez and, believing that Harold is Promethium's boss, orders his capture. Richard and Elaine leave Mexico the next morning without Harold when he seemingly disappears. Harold, hiding away at a motel, convinces the motel's operators, brothers Ronaldo and Ernesto to pose as kidnappers in an extortion plan in which he calls Richard pretending to be kidnapped in exchange for a hefty ransom. Richard calls his former-mercenary-turned-humanitarian brother Mitch (Sharlto Copley) to rescue Harold... Rotten Tomatoes critical consensus reads, "Gringo rounds up a bafflingly overqualified cast for a misfire of a comedy that's fatally undermined by its messy plot, poorly conceived characters, and obvious debts to better films." "Gringo" is another one of those Tarantinoesque sort of films with multiple stories and characters intertwining, but "Gringo" manages to still be a bit entertaining and enjoyable for a movie night despite it being a bit messy and uneven with a wish for being something closer to Tarantino. They have tried to fit in all sorts of genres in this film; action, comedy, satire, crime caper etc and the end result is for sure over the top, but that´s fine. However, the feeling of having seen bits and pieces in "Gringo" somewhere else makes the film a bit less unique and standalone. "Gringo" is ok, but nothing more, nothing less.

I'm not sure about the poor scores here on RT - I thought it was pretty fun overall just to go along with the chase

This movie's nature seemed to have flew over the majority of the audiences head, and not appreciate the value of this movie. It simply had charisma and fast paced shift of events which it seems it was confused with chaos and urged scenes. But no, the movie had amazing scenes and great a acting with very impressively developed characters in a short time. And due to the fact that it had so many it was like a chaotic free for all fight for the life. But the plot was rock solid despite what others say, if you pay attention to the detail, it's all there. The action scenes where really lacking a lot sadly and the ones that where in the movie where kept pretty much simple and too realistic for this kind of a movie. But that drama, the unforeseen entertaining twists and the hilarious similes where amazingly fitting and it also created immersion. Apparently this was also hard to appreciate for the general viewers. Also the message of the movie is super solid and very well delivered not just at the ending but through out the movie, and at the same time realistic and reflecting our real life problems. (Learn to appreciate) Overall this was a charismatic movie with fresh style, and great acting that deserves all the respect for creating something fresh in this genre. It's deserving of a very good movie tag. And sadly super under rated!!! (This is me not being subjective and claiming that this movie deserves better)

What a heroic piece of crap. The plot ambles, the characters are 1-dimensional, and the redeeming factors are...entirely absent. If you're looking for an action movie you'll be disappointed and if you're looking for a laugh you'll be incredibly disappointed. Save yourself the time and scroll past this one on your Netflix app.
