The true story of Pfc. Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield), who won the Congressional Medal of Honor despite refusing to bear arms during WWII on religious grounds. Doss was drafted and ostracized by fellow soldiers for his pacifist stance but went on to earn respect and adoration for his bravery, selflessness and compassion after he risked his life -- without firing a shot -- to save 75 men in the Battle of Okinawa.

The trouble is this proper hero worship is drawn out and overstated in a bloated film that could lose 20 minutes of first-act exposition and 15 minutes of battle scene redundancies from its 131 minutes.

The superbly shot battle scenes aside, Gibson’s traditionalist sensibilities show up in how he shoots everything else which is a perfect fit for this particular film. It’s easy to get lost in the period he visualizes.

From the producers to the directors to the actors to the actresses, they got it right. The moving thing throughout this film is the courage to keep holding on to your morals and conviction even when the world is telling you otherwise. There are some scenes to make you want to look away due to it being a war movie but all in all this goes down as one of my favorites!

A moving story that skates elegantly between being sweet and sentimental while also showing the harsh and often brutal realities of war. The power of faith and conviction is put to the test when Desmond Doss refuses to bear arms during WWII. Great acting all around, and Garfield delivers a sympathetic performance that keeps the viewer engaged in his struggle to uphold his oath never to touch a firearm

A truly fantastic film! Screenplay, cast, direction, everything is top-notch. And to make it even more perfect, it's based on real events. In other words, it's among the best cinematic productions. It's a powerful film that, regardless of your beliefs, deserves your time and respect.
