Contrived plot purposely pulls at heartstrings.

This is just the type of "dignified" tragedy Louis B. Mayer loved to churn out in the 1940s, where characters - even the unsavory ones - acted so noble they practically turned to statues before your eyes.

Demonstrates the lowest, most unscrupulous technique of filmmaking -- it involves no imagination, creativity, or original ideas.

Staring thoughtfully into the middle distance, Ms. Sobieski looks as if she is already contemplating better scripts.

Here on Earth slides too easily into its sentimentality; the characters should have put up more of a struggle.

Here on Earth is so very general in its characters and story that it actively keeps you from enjoying the simple pleasures of a movie like this, even with your sights set low.

Don't be surprised if you exit Here on Earth feeling both moved and incredulous.

Michael Seitzman's screenplay is stultifyingly bad, wandering all over the place between generic, 'wrong -side- of -the- tracks' love triangles, lame romance, and emotional manipulation.

The title is Here, but the plot is unfortunately all over the place.

Even a casting flip-flop couldn't have saved Here on Earth's predictable premise, detestable dialogue or incongruous characters.

Hell on Earth might be more like it...so manipulative that a viewer can't help but feel emotionally manhandled by the time it finally lets go.

Here On Earth manages to hit enough right notes and overcome most of its deficiencies to earn a passing grade.

Look for a crash landing as this airless, misbegotten movie sinks under the weight of a boggy, recycled tale of paths crossing on the proverbial wrong side of the tracks.

While the positive aspects of not being a 14-year-old girl definitely beat the negative, there would be one short-term asset: It would probably make it a whole lot easier to appreciate Here On Earth.

Here on Earth does what it can to flatten the ascending careers of its attractive leads, yet Chris Klein and Leelee Sobieski probably will live to see another big-screen day.

A film that wants to be both simultaneously slick and tender and misses both by a country mile.

It's hard to think of any recent film that features more ridiculous, cornball dialogue.
