Insidious

Critics Consensus

Aside from a shaky final act, Insidious is a very scary and very fun haunted house thrill ride.

A worthy start to an influential franchise, the supreme mix of Wan and Whannell proves to blend enough ghouls and grime to result in a fun film. Byrne fits the "contemporary stone-faced worrier" of a mother horror archetype that seems so popular nowadays and she does rather well as the tired-eyed parent of a young boy in a coma, who seems to be attracting the tormented and often disfigured demons who inhabit a distant realm. Patrick Wilson balances her out well with the warmth of the father-figure and also gives a good performance as a genuinely concerned and worried parent. The use of colour borrows heavily from the work of Argento and thats a good thing, smearing our worst nightmares in candy-coloured paint, contrasting to the bleakness of the real world. The main demon antagonist is a little kooky though and depending on its audience will definitely inspire a few unintentional laughs.

Insidious is one scary movie. With a spine-tingling soundtrack, creepy images, and a refreshing lack of blood, Insidious is hugely frightening horror movie fare that will thrillingly haunt you when the lights go out. Rating: 82

I don't usually do horror movies, but this one was actually pretty good, even if I did spend a great amount of time talking and yelling at the TV to distract myself from potential jump scenes.

Creepy and atmospheric, Insidious is a dark supernatural thriller. After witnessing several disturbances Renai Lambert starts to suspect that her new house is haunted and that her family is in danger. Featuring Rose Byrne, Patrick Wilson, and Barbara Hershey, the cast has some impressive talent. However, the script is rather weak and starts to fall apart in the last act. It's also quite predictable (after a certain point) and starts to follow the usual haunted house/possession formula. Insidious delivers a few scares, but overall it's a pretty rote horror film.
