What's the point in making a documentary about a classic album if you don't have the rights to any of the music?

Even blessed with such a rich subject and vast reserves of archive footage, It Was Fifty Years Ago Today! still has the threadbare feel of an unauthorized cash-in.

Fifty Years is guilty of being gratingly generic and of accepting too tough a challenge: to properly explore a hugely significant collection of songs without featuring any of them.

This is the most frustrating film. It's probably no fault of the makers, but it's rare to have to assess a documentary for what it doesn't have.

With a two-hour bombardment of talking heads of varying relevance, Parker tries gamely, but fails resoundingly, to overcome his documentary's glaring paradox - that it's a film about music containing no music.

Audience Reviews for It Was Fifty Years Ago Today... Sgt Pepper and Beyond

½

Compared to Ron Howard's Eight Days a Week this is awful. Too many uninteresting talking heads (none of the Fab Four themselves) who had little to nothing to do with the release of the Sgt. Pepper album. Beatles history covered in many other documentaries. Limited archival footage. And the filmmakers could not afford to license ANY Beatles music to support something that is supposed to be all about an iconic album.
