During the Holocaust, acclaimed German director, singer and actor Kurt Gerron is captured by Nazis in Amsterdam and sent to Theresienstadt concentration camp. While there, he opens a cabaret, or, Karussell, in which he performs and puts on shows for the prisoners. He is also forced to make a propaganda film about the camp in exchange for his life. This documentary chronicles his life and work through interviews with survivors, sound footage and modern renditions of his songs.
