tragic romance love the performance
Just like the author who wrote the original story, he was telling the story only, with no intention to impress anyone. Being exposed to such a powerful love story feels like experiencing the eruption of a dormant volcano. One second you are stilling standing on a safe ground, the next second you are shaking and trembling, being wrapped by our own emotional movement but have nowhere to escape. This is a soul-waking, classic and impeccable film.
Lan Yu was apparently shot in secret, which would probably explain the look of the film. Apart from the circumstances in which it was made, the film does not break any new ground, and is rather conventionally melodramatic.
the screenwriting and editing needed the touch of someone with higher caliber. it reached for the heights of brokeback mountain, but ultimately ended up short.
liu ye and hu jun's acting save the whole story!
great cast, really supports the whole story.
the plot however is kind of weak and flat.
The cinematography turns the script into a nice work and the cliche formula of the genre is sophisticatedly adjusted with the new twist of criticism of the rapid modernisation of mainland China.
No storyline but still can catch your feel, that's mean tremendous acting and directing
Liu Ye's flamboyant acting was indeed started at the very beginning of his career actually.
Winner, most scenes in which characters wake up groggy and still tired in tawdry Beijing apartments. Cigarette, anyone?
