Movie Info

In this drama that features soundtrack songs by Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Bob Dylan, Little Fauss, a mild-mannered, dim-bulb beginning motorcycle racer is befriended by Big Halsy, a loudmouth pro who has been banned from the track. Halsy offers Fauss a mechanic's job if only Fauss will allow him to assume his name and bike. The duo embark upon a series of adventures on the road usually culminating in Halsy taking advantage of Fauss. More abuse ensues when the two fall in love with Rita Nebraska. Eventually Fauss decides he has had enough, and the two duel it out on the track.

  • There are some men whose tragedy arises not from what they suffer but what they fail to feel. Little Fauss and Big Halsy are such men -- and so are those who made the movie.

  • Hampered by a thin screenplay, film is padded further by often-pretentious direction by Sidney J. Furie against expansive physical values.

  • Rotten to the core without a surface ripple in its moral superiority.

  • Little Fauss and Big Halsy is a mixed bag, with a helter skelter plot but nicely coordinated motorcycle action and some good background music by Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Bob Dylan.

Audience Reviews for Little Fauss and Big Halsy

  • Jan 30, 2009
LITTLE FAUS AND BIG HALSY (1970) Robert Redford, Micahel J. Pollard, and Lauren Hutton Unconventional cinematography and sharp dialogue give this arcane and unusual, darkly satirical drama a distinctly '70's feel. A sexy, shirtless Robert Redford's most interesting role and the best bit of acting of his career, though the actor reportedly disfavors the film. Macho, cold, yet perversely charming, he is at his most photogenic as Halsy. Mint 400 fans will love the motorcycle action sequences, but the film is really an intense character study, and exists to be a sardonic portrait rather than a sports-themed movie. Redford and Pollard's solid character acting is complimented by colorful performances by veteran character actors Lucille Benson and Noah Beery Jr. PLOT: An amoral motorcycle racer takes a novice under his wing for a tour of the western dirt bike circuit . Halsy (Redford) is a textbook high-functioning psychopath who forms an uneasy alliance with the wide-eyed, admiring wannabe, Little Faus (Pollard), but mercilessly uses and abuses him in the process. A bumbling hanger-on, Faus idolizes Halsey and emulates him in every way. A profound betrayal by Halsy marks a turning point in the story -and in Little Faus's personality. Faus's endearing innocence and gentle nature begin to disappear as his personality assumes more and more of the traits that characterize his former friend/present nemesis. Having acquired all those of Halsy's trappings which he has despised, he sets out to track down his former mentor and ruthlessly even the score.
