After the death of the British prime minister, the world's most powerful leaders gather in London to pay their respects. If it wasn’t for the more believable premise, the moments of fatherhood and Gerard Butler’s performance, this would also be a huge fail. For some audiences that won’t be enough and it’ll come off cold but for others, there is some fun to be had here.

I watched this and its predecessor on IFC last night because I don’t think I saw them when they came out. Now I know why. I think I also know why the mass casualty action films of the 90s stopped being blockbuster material. Sept 11, Sandy Hook and all the mass shootings since made it hard to watch this kind of bloodbath for most people. Even my father, who passed the year this came out, couldn’t take this stuff anymore. He hated Law Abiding Citizen, and I grew up watching cop movies with him. Butler can keep making them for his diminishing audience, but, as he learned with Greenland 2, he had better keep the budgets low or he’ll continue to lose money. Maybe it’s time to get into another genre.

At this rate, Banning is in class with Wick, Bourne and Hunt. Major one man army vibes with the quippy retorts to boot. Entertaining.
