A lonely, aging movie star named Bob Harris (Bill Murray) and a conflicted newlywed, Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson), meet in Tokyo. Bob is there to film a Japanese whiskey commercial; Charlotte is accompanying her celebrity-photographer husband. Strangers in a foreign land, the two find escape, distraction and understanding amidst the bright Tokyo lights after a chance meeting in the quiet lull of the hotel bar. The purest, most delicate dramedy of all time. A perfect balance of the two mammoth genres, brought together with a massive heart, first class direction and some of the best chemistry from two actors ever put on screen. Bill Murray has never been more humble, heartbreaking or genuine in his entire career.

A perfect movie, so eloquently pulling at some of the most simple yet meaningful parts of the soul. Adult loneliness and the fear of not being where you are meant to be. The magic in Translation is how hauntingly beautiful Johannson and Murray emote without saying too much, but saying just enough. The character of Tokyo is also fleshed out in a way that will linger with you always.

This movie was so easy to watch. There’s nothing bad I can say about it. It’s a cute movie about people dealing with basically life and the turns it takes. I’m glad I chose it after a long day. It doesn’t have any emotional intensity which was really appreciated. If you wanna turn off your brain and let your mind float above tourists being tourists in a foreign country in 2003 then here’s the movie for you.

Felt like I took a trip to Japan. SJ was great even if I found the situationship implausible. I honestly think Bill’s best acting role is in St. Vincent. I had to check this one out since he got the best actor nom…This was very nice too.
