The results are both mesmerizing and provocative.
Here is a man who experienced something terrible and strange, and who has been using his art as a method of exploring his psyche. That's very human.
The doc has no framing mechanism, it's an hour of Huggins talking or other UFO believers talking about him. We are never told whether the filmmaker is a UFO believer or not. This is problematic.
Ultimately, this film doesn't tell us very much about extraterrestrials (even if you're a believer you will have heard similar sories before), but it has plenty to say about being human.
It would have been so easy for Brad Abrahams to treat his subject as a fanciful, delusional man (or worse, as a joke), but Love and Saucers remains laudably deferential to David Huggins.
Credulous and indulgent
Abraham hasn't proved that aliens exist with his film, but he certainly makes you think about it.
Love and Saucers is a well-crafted, uncomplicated, accessible documentary that simply allows its subject to tell his story.
As hinted at by the title, Love and Saucers is a heartfelt profile of an entirely ordinary man, albeit it one whose life has been shaped by extraordinary events.
Unlike other documentaries that have an agenda... or that subtly coach their subjects to look or sound ridiculous, director Brad Abrahams simply allows David to tell his intimate, fascinating and incredible story.
Brad Abrahams' documentary... is an ambiguous picture of a man who has embraced otherness as the ultimate escape from earthly concerns.
