Mark and Mary, acquaintances from college, run into each other at a drug store as Mary is buying a pregnancy test. The test is negative and the two wind up dating and rapidly falling for each other. Mark has a more traditional view of relationships and Mary's view is more modern and progressive. They try "ethical non-monogamy" at Mary's request, and create their own version of an open relationship, while also trying to balance their fledgling careers and friendships. Through a series of ups and downs, Mary starts to realize she's more traditional than she thought whereas Mark starts to open up and see the world differently through Mary and a polyamorous lens.

The script may fail to realistically explore the depths of polyamory, but thanks to dreamy chemistry between its two young leads and some genuinely funny scenes, Mark, Mary & Some Other People proves itself more than worth your while.

What a refreshing change to the modern over-produced movie. Flawed characters struggle with maturity and expectations as they navigate options without considering consequence and damage. The interaction between the characters is disarmingly genuine, it is hard not to feel for them. And how great that, while playing with fire, the movie allowed them to get burnt. You got the impression that no one really knew what they were doing, except the writer/director, Hannah Marks, who handles the chaos with genius precision.

"La La Land" without the musical numbers, but with absolutely charismatic performances by Ben Rosenfield and Hayley Law. The course of young love never runs smoothly and Law and Rosenfield play it to perfection, with chemistry to spare. Both deserve to be stars. The script is both heartbreaking and funny.

I enjoy the cinematography with the aspect ratio feeling like a family college, and the shaky camera movement adds to the realism as if you were there. However, this does not save the movie completely with the second act feeling a bit stale and boring. I would be lying if I said I didn't find my self laughing at some of the jokes, and if I said I didn't find the story interesting. With the third act of the movie really bringing it back to that realism, and a soundtrack that fits really well. Especially Green Days "Holy Toledo". All around an alright movie I wouldn't really recommend, but still has a nice message and does what some other rom-coms are to afraid to do.
