A fun and entertaining movie to watch. Good to kill time and have some laughs with friends and family. Interesting and unexpected plot, which is both fun and complex. The bit with Danny Glover was very funny, when you notice is him.
It could have been great. Three wonderful stars, a clever premise, and beautiful scenery. But the humor is too broad, there is too much caricature, and the movie is too long. Cute, light summer fare, but a real disappointment for what might have been.
Full of humor and energy among the characters
Its disappointing that such one dimensional critics can have popular enough opinions to have a job. This is one of the best films ever, aside from the wit and charm it has enduring themes of what real hero movies today ought to be about, kindness, patience, and seeing the best in others, sacrifice, putting these values ahead of money
Gibson and Garner in rare and very funny form
I've been meaning to watch this film for 26 years since my wife's cousin has a background shot (he's the string bass player in the band once they get onto the riverboat).
Very affable, much like the TV show; constantly reversing itself to show that absolutely everything is a scam by all folks against all others. My only problem is that it goes on at least a half hour too long. The running gag really wears out it's welcome by the end.
full of tricks and cheats..
3 Out Of 5
Maverick is a troubled plot driven, in its self-created multi-genre feature that offers every bit of a taste but can also be too much to savor in a plate. The first two acts are light and breezy where everything screams "mundane" of it but latter in its final act, the wind changer the direction and so does opinion, expectation that gets shattered, pulling out its hidden cards up the sleeve, the feature endorses its genre at best.
It is rich on technical aspects like costume design, production design and editing. The only issue in here would be its elaborated plan that may not hold the viewers for it runs and enjoys a bit much even after showing all its tricks. The screenplay is gripping and humorous that is tightly packed with concrete material and evenly paced, offering the audience their some of the best 2 hours of life.
Roy Higgins and William Goldman; the screenwriters has done an amazing work on writing this script but it unfortunately is surpassed by Richard Donner's brilliant execution skills that ups the ante of the game with its own terms. Surprisingly, Mel Gibson is flat out hilarious and convincing as the trickster along with Jodie Foster as her supportive cast.
Maverick; similar to its protagonist, is full of tricks and cheats that does fool the audience along with entertaining them; the perfect package.
One of my favorite westerns ever. Lighthearted entertainment, yes. But lighthearted comedy at its very best!
Charming, fun and witty.
Adapted from the hit '50s television series, Maverick is a fun and exciting western from director Richard Donner. On his way to the All River's Draw Poker Championship professional card player Bret Maverick gets into a series of misadventures while trying to collect the last three thousand dollars of his entry fee. Starring Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Alfred Molina, and James Garner, the film has a great cast that delivers some really good performances. And the comedy is lighthearted and campy in all the right ways (without being too cute or slapsticky). Also, the fight scenes and chases are energetic and action-packed. A film that the whole family can enjoy, Maverick is entertaining and delivers a lot of laughs.
