Dilettante 7 @RT82395896 Apr 4 Saw this years ago, still haunts my memory. As i recall, Pete Dexter deservedly won the National Book award for it. Got it out from Blockbuster, then got it out the next night to watch it again. Hershey and Harris did a great job, but for me the star was Dennis Hopper, who played the scariest villain I've ever seen onscreen. I'm not sure that it's even available in most DVD libraries but if you see it, grab a copy. But, be warned. This is a seriously disturbing film with one of the worst sexual violence scenes I have ever witnessed. If you thought Hopper was compelling as Frank Booth in Blue Velvet then you are in for a big dose of deja-vu. Hopper's racist, violent, sociopathic loansharking character is every bit as frightening & every bit as compelling. Ever wondered what Frank Booth would be like if he had real social power? A wife?
