Alain E @AlainE Feb 20 Weinstein was a creep but he didn’t make many bad movies. The flock of critics who gave this film zero or half a star are well trained to follow their shepherd. Well photographed, often with a blue or green shade, this movie adequately presents the period when people believed that cults of satanists were everywhere. Today, the same people wear MAGA hats instead. It seems the vast majority didnt finish the movie because they thought they had it figured out before the ending 😂! In reality, this is a masterfully crafted satire on the typical psychological thriller theatrics and gimmicks perfectly exaggerated to prove a point, that too much self-insistence only makes a fool out of you. I really cant say Ive been this thoroughly bamboozled by a psychological thriller in quite some time, all to realize, SURPRISE, this isnt a psychological thriller and I, THE VIEWER! AM THE FOOL! People are judging this like it’s a real documentary. It is a historical fiction BASED on fact. Most films are loosely based on real events. This is one of those. The he actors did a great job. They did not write the movie. The screenplay is a little all over the map at the beginning, but otherwise it’s interesting. Reality is scary. Cults exist. They can be involved in things the average person is terrified by. This is about that. People don’t usually like the truth. There is a great performance from Hawke, some compelling characters and enough mystery to keep you guessing. From that point it’s mildly amusing for awhile as it seems like it may go somewhere interesting, only to undo everything before ending on a note that tried to tie it together but failed.
