Tangled

Critics Consensus

While far from Disney's greatest film, Tangled is a visually stunning, thoroughly entertaining addition to the studio's classic animated canon.

Some nice action scenes and anima-tography, but other aspects, particularly the musical side and some of the CGI isn't quite up to the Frozen level.

Rapunzel! Why hadn't Disney taken the story in a motion picture before? For being the 50th film of the Disney animation studios, it is a film that surpasses expectations and preconceived notions, with an effective touch of modernity. 3D animation captures motions and emotions that traditional animation can't. I do not support one animation style more than the other; as long as the advantages offered by every means at disposal are utilized in the wisest of ways, from purposes of comedic physical actions to capture tenderness, from constructing musical numbers and exploring visually rich scenarios to direct action sequences, the animation style is everything and creating a world is possible. From my personal experience and point of view, 3D can be more convenient at capturing visually rich scenarios, more effective slapstick humor that involves direct physical characters' contact, accelerating the pace of the film if required and constructing more geometrical figures, objects and shapes. Tangled does all of the above, except exploring its world. Once Rapunzel goes out to the world, it is easy to forget you are living in an era of centuries ago even if the scenarios are there. This is a magical romance in the most classic of all traditions, and such tradition involves taking us back to another century while it engulfs the actions of the characters, like the first Shrek film did. Despite that, I can say that Tangled is better than what it may seem at first glance, and an intention so noble to revive the past days that it barely acquired the honor to be the 50th representative animated feature of Disney's empire. 58/100

Though beautiful to look at and featuring some pleasant music, Tangled really does not hold a candle to any previous Disney film. The characters, though well-developed, are not strong enough to support the already weak and cliche story.

In "Tangled," a magical flower is used to save the life of the queen during the birth of her daughter, Rapunzel. Needing the magic of the flower, which now resides in the princess, to maintain her youthful complexion and eternal life, Gothel kidnaps her, keeping her a prisoner in her remote tower, not so much through force but by guilt tripping and misinformation about the outside world. So, Rapunzel, about to turn 18, dreams and paints constantly about it which arrives in the person of Flynn Rider, a thief who just sold out his confederates in the theft of the crown. In return for not selling him up the river, he promises to take her to see the floating lanterns while Gothel is off on an errand. "Tangled" is an entertaining animated musical from Disney(which you can tell from the horses overacting) that I would not argue with anybody if they called it cute. So much so, that it is definitely reminiscent of the older generation of animated films which is not to be construed as criticism.(For those of us of a different geeky bent, we get our nostalgia in the voice of Zachary Levi to remind us of the first three years of "Chuck.") And yes, there are the usual lessons of sharing your toys with others while also how good it is to get out of the house on occasion to see what the whole world has in store.
