On a mission to secure the hostile takeover of an English business for his employer and mentor, George Salt (Burl Ives), power-hungry executive Cliff Barton (Robert Taylor) meets and falls hard for Miriam Linka (Elisabeth Mueller), a beautiful and charming European woman. Unfortunately, Barton is already engaged to Salt's nubile niece Joan (Nicola Michaels). And when his coworkers discover that Miriam is a refugee, suspected former prostitute and possible Communist, a scandal ensues.
