When The Christmas Chronicles 2 hones in on the essential spirit of the season it's a good time - it just isn't a good time as reliably or convincingly as it once was.

Russell and Hawn do their best to power through, but after almost two increasingly stilted hours of this stuff - which is far too long for a film of this type - the couple's kindly twinkles look a little strained.

Christmas Chronicles 2 is in the bigger, badder sequel mold, and even when it is blatant about it, the Christmas spirit is irresistible.

Kids will eat it all up, but let's face it, they also love the food at Chuck E. Cheese.

The movie starts to feel mechanical, like the Village's churning candy cane mill. But its output is always as sweet.

It pivots back to childish fare, like elves carousing to "Who Let the Dogs Out" or another baffling musical number that reinforces Russell's confusing hot-Santa vibe while also stalling the plot.

A fairly average winter escapade lifted by Russell's performance and an impressive level of detail.

Columbus summons a hearty fun factor with this lively adventure.

The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two, like the first film, is largely carried on Russell's capable shoulders, but adding Hawn to the mix gives this sequel a gratifying reason for existing outside of "just more Christmas Chronicles."

It's hard not to think of The Christmas Chronicles series as a series of wasted opportunities. Kurt Russell as Santa Claus, with Goldie Hawn his doting wife, is such an inspired casting choice that it's a real bummer to see them do so little with it.

The Christmas Chronicles: Part 2 isn't much of a film. It can be more easily classified as "content," or more charitably as "a product."

It is mercifully not as bad as "Pixels."

The combination of elements is undeniably crowd-pleasing, Camp and Bruno get stuck into some enjoyable derring-do and Russell's 'sexy' take on Santa is truly one for the ages.

A predictable, but fun, family friendly holiday movie. The sets alone are sure to get you in a cheery mood!
