At the start of the Civil War in Virginia, cowardly Frank Winslow (Charles Ray) refuses to enlist in the Confederate army. His father, Col. Jefferson Windlow (Frank Keenan), forces his son to enlist, but when Frank deserts, the colonel takes his place to uphold the family's honor. While hiding in an attic, Frank overhears the plans of Yankee soldiers being made below. He overpowers a soldier and dresses in his uniform to relay the news -- only to be confronted by his father on picket duty.

May 27, 2015As a movie it's a hoary old chestnut but as an historical document it's fascinating. The damage to the print actually adds to the filling that you're watching a series of Matthew Brady daguerreotypes come to life.
