Day of the Dead was a rough watch for me, despite its reputation. I really tried to stay invested, but the film never fully pulled me in. Instead of steadily building tension, it feels like it constantly jumps around, never finding a rhythm or momentum that works. A big part of the issue comes from the filmmaking style of the era. While some movies from that timeframe balance atmosphere and storytelling well, this one felt messy and unfocused. The story is oversaturated with ideas but lacks solid groundwork, making several moments feel unintentionally silly rather than tense. The zombie-on-the-phone scene in particular completely broke any sense of seriousness for me. The direction also feels misguided. There are choices that could have been easily adjusted or removed, but instead they’re doubled down on, making the film feel worse as it goes on. Rather than improving or tightening up, it slowly loses steam. I understand why some fans consider it a classic

Tom Savini’s practical SFX at their best, with a super strong female lead rivaling the greats like Ripley Scott, and a villain whose humanity is not unlike some political leaders we all know. Day Of The Dead is both the most human of the trilogy, while also the most monstrous.

A great character study and very good cinematography highlight this third installment of George Romero's zombie saga. Not quite as good as Dawn of the Dead but it has its moments. A must watch for Romero fans, 80s horror and zombie apocalypse pictures.

The master of the undead pulls out all the stops and creates what might be the best piece of “zombie” media. The characters are fascinating, the make-up and gore effects are incredible, and the story feels unconventional within the zombie sub genre in a very refreshing way.
