Movie Info

The Ghastly Love of Johnny X is a truly mad concoction, blending 1950s sci-fi melodrama, song-and-dance, and a touch of horror - a mesmerizing big screen spectacular! The fun begins as Johnny X and his misfit gang of juvenile delinquents from outer space are sentenced to Earth where "ghastly" is the word! With highly stylized musical numbers, tons of genuinely humorous dialogue and wacky plot twists, Johnny X is the only sci-fi dark comedy musical romance you need to see this year! Beautifully photographed on the last of Kodak's 35mm black and white Plus X film stock, the cast includes sexy new stars Will Keenan and De Anna Joy Brooks, as well as seasoned professionals Creed Bratton, Reggie Bannister, Kate Maberly, Paul Williams and the late Kevin McCarthy in his final role. -- (C) Official Site

  • "Ghastly Love" tries to work the same campy vibe as "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" but learns how hard that is to pull off.

  • What makes this film work is the passion Paul Bunnell injects into it; he obviously loves and is a connoisseur of the genres he pays homage to.

  • An affectionate and consistently amusing homage to a whole bunch of movies that probably shouldn't go together.

  • Nothing here makes much sense or strives to. What's worse (or better) is that any scene with more than three lines of dialogue will have you craving a copy of 'Jane Eyre' to reconstitute your brain cells.

Alien juvenile delinquents are exiled to earth, where they scheme to control a "resurrection suit" that can bring a recently deceased rock and roll star back from the dead. In black and white with musical numbers. The hepcat influences here are so cool you root for the movie to work, but the incoherent script, flat musical numbers and lame attempts at comedy lead to nowheresville. Still, there are a few campy kicks along the way, including "The Office"'s Creed Bratton as an unlikely rock idol.

A 50's B-movie made in the 2010's. It had its moments, but all in all I was a bit disappointed.
