Unfortunately, the serial-killer-as-artiste trope is a little culturally exhausted, and von Trier's attempts to liven it up don't really work.

Von Trier may be a provocateur, but his brand of provocation seems to be growing stale.

Over-indulgent, underwhelming and sometimes deeply unpalatable slog unfolds.

Haters gonna hate, and von Trier gonna von Trier as hard as he can. That should give you some gauge as to whether you should bail from The House That Jack Built right now.

...The House That Jack Built becomes a different film, one that is quite astonishing... If these scenes don't redeem the film's brutality, which Von Trier must not care about anyway, they sure (as hell) make it entertaining.

The violence in The House That Jack Built is horrific...you've been warned.

Oh. Look. Someone has gone and made a serial killer movie that only a serial killer could truly appreciate. That is not a recommendation, by the way...

If this shrill, manipulative, sledge-hammer allegory is right for our times, give me Dante any day. Von Trier has certainly done better, but never worse.

The cocktail is not for all tastes, but behind its layer of vulgarity there is some very conscious and partially indecipherable discourse. [Full Review in Spanish]

Lars von Trier has carved out his own creative path with fearless energy. I am a great admirer of all his films. Here, von Trier transforms Matt Dillon into a sensation.

[Von Trier] has managed to completely control the excesses of self-indulgence that entail such a tremendous gesture of sincerity. [Full Review in Spanish]

Dillon is insanely convincing in his performance; Von Trier obtains an extravagant blend of horror and humor from the monstrosity of his character.

It's compelling viewing, gore and all, but it also says exactly what you think it will.

The film of Lars von Trier can be interpreted as the sonorous lament of who aspired to the Louvre and had to settle for the Saatchi Gallery. [Full Review in Spanish]

As is expected from Von Trier, the film is visually unapproachable, but narratively it winds up being confusing. [Full Review in Spanish]

A superb Matt Dillon, who at the same time offers fragility and cockiness to a unique serial killer. [Full review in Spanish]

Here, examined, we're given instead raw narcissism, humdrum in the end, a soul worth glimpsing only for a second before casting aside. Nothing to behold.

The mental process of a psychopath has rarely been addressed with such harshness and irony and with equal effectiveness by a genius out of the ordinary who knows how to build poetry only in destruction. [Full Review in Spanish]
