Movie Info

The Jewish Cardinal tells the amazing true story of Jean-Marie Lustiger, the son of Polish-Jewish immigrants, who maintained his cultural identity as a Jew even after converting to Catholicism at a young age, and later joining the priesthood. Quickly rising within the ranks of the Church, Lustiger was appointed Archbishop of Paris by Pope Jean Paul II - and found a new platform to celebrate his dual identity as a Catholic Jew, earning him both friends and enemies from either group. When Carmelite nuns settle down to build a convent within the cursed walls of Auschwitz, Lustiger finds himself a mediator between the two communities - and may be forced at last to choose his side. It holds your interest, even if Jean-Marie remains what he must be to Mr. Cohen: an enticing puzzlement, his faith a mystery.

Can a person be two things at once? Yes. Not only is it possible, but it can be of value. Lustiger proved that, and The Jewish Cardinal underscores it.

Informative, absorbing, but as obvious as its title and a bit too glib for its own good, this French import will appeal mainly to religious addicts fascinated by the feverishly agenda-ridden internal workings of the Catholic Church.

Audience Reviews for The Jewish Cardinal

A crisp, emotionally and historically credible story of two strong characters in the modern Catholic Church history. Very well done.

An interesting story, though not a particularly engaging movie. We skim through a few decades hitting the highlights, focusing on the Carmelite convent at Auschwitz, with occasional pauses for character moments. It's not a bad movie, but rather than a fully fleshed out story, we get the bones of the story decorated with a few bits of dangling flesh.
