Movie Info

Featuring in-depth interviews with F.W. de Klerk, former South African president Thabo Mbeki (1999-2008), anti-apartheid activists Father Michael Lapsley and Mathews Phosa, Yasmin Sooka of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Richard Goldstone (who headed the Goldstone Commission investigations into political violence) and many others, filmmaker Nic Rossier explores the fascinating political journey and legacy of this complex figure. Nations mired in conflict and recovering from civil war will benefit from better understanding this flawed, yet ultimately successful political leader that managed to bridge two opposing worlds. Ultimately, The Other Man explores the trajectory of this unique nation and reflects on how the end of apartheid will CONTINUE to shape South Africans and the world for years to come. All Critics (6) | Top Critics (4)

Haphazard both as biography and historical survey, the film asks more salient questions than it can answer in a rushed 76 minutes.

Top Critic

None of this is particularly cinematic ... but it is engaging, mainly because the stakes were so high and the statesmanship so delicate.

February 6, 2015 | Full Review…

Rossier allows space for the man's culpability even as he convincingly shows that without de Klerk's involvement, the struggle for black liberation would have been much harder and taken much longer.

February 3, 2015 | Full Review…

It is infuriating to watch de Klerk apologists insist that apartheid actually helped blacks.

February 5, 2015

The material being offered has been edited, composed, and made sentimental with the rigor of a political ad campaign.
