Critics Consensus

There's no denying that mother! is the thought-provoking product of a singularly ambitious artistic vision, though it may be too unwieldy for mainstream tastes.

[Darren] Aronofsky wants mother! to have the intensity and inner logic of a sweaty nightmare. But it's a fake cinematic fever dream-the kind made by a director so self-conscious that he's always checking his own temperature. Go to Full Review

Ultimately, you may be left pondering not so much the allegory as to why [Darren] Aronofsky would want to push not just his audience but his girlfriend through such an extreme wringer. Go to Full Review

Ian Y 07/21/2024 Not a horror film. And not a good film.. See more Thom M @rollingcodes 6d Great performances and cinematography— unfortunately, there is a point where no amount of talent can fix a poorly laid out script that is trying to do way too many things at once. My single complaint about the film was that it built everything properly all the way up to the climax, only to then cancel its own world-building with that ridiculously off-brand ending. The explosion was the climax we were all waiting for; the desperate final act of agency… but then the last 5 minutes could not have been executed any worse, and even felt like an entirely different movie, because it literally muted the best parts of the story so badly it doomed the entire production. The fact I come away thinking “wtf why isn’t he dead?” instead of “yea fuck you, man— you just sacrificed our child, im going to blow everything up” says a lot about how easy it is to completely nullify all production value with a lazy ending; calling it an upsetting or even bad ending would give the ending too much credit See more Rebecca S @Becca01 Jul 3 Mother! is not a horror film, but a profoundly symbolic masterpiece of spiritual revelation—a vivid allegory tracking the cyclical history of creation, temptation, sacrifice, and the ultimate new beginning. See more Griffith J @griffithxjohnson Jul 1 This unapologetically does everything in its power to make me feel absolutely awful & I respect it so much for meeting its goal. I call it "social horror" as the main fear is uninvited strangers in the protagonist’s house being rude, awkward, & so uncomfortable that it leads to hostility. It’s wildly upsetting & disturbing with a blatant disregard for the lead’s space, possessions, & wishes being pushed to the most extreme level possible. The rising tide of chaos is so well paced that there isn’t a clear moment when things flip but once you’re swept away in it, you find yourself asking how it even ended up here. Of course the metaphor is heavy handed but I argue it needs to be to meet its purpose of presenting themes that are dangerously close to blasphemy. See more Vince P @Vince.P Jun 21 The acting, cinematography, sound design, special effects, and set design are all exceptional. I appreciated the ambition of retelling Biblical and creation myths through allegory, and the cyclical destruction/rebirth ending resonated with me. Unfortunately, the film's worldview undermined what could have been a great movie. God is portrayed as almost diabolically self-absorbed, humanity as purely destructive, and Mother as a perpetually helpless victim incapable of growth or evolution. The result felt more cynical than profound. I admired the craftsmanship, but I found the message one-dimensional and emotionally exhausting rather than transcendent.
