A M P @AMPatrick 1 day ago For a coming-of-age movie, EOS is uneventful and unfunny. The characters -- particularly the female characters -- are flat and cartoonish. That's true of the supposed heroine as well. Her big mistakes, we are made to understand, include actively pursuing a man she likes, not reciprocating the talented and rich (!) male friend's desire for her, and growing frustrated that her only friend snubs her for her brother and his friends. For the most part, the male characters serve as the voice of reason to calm all the hysterical women, while the sensible female characters mostly just smile silently. The ending suggests to the young audience what most Hollywood films suggest, which is that romantic/sexual love is superior to platonic love and prioritizing the former over the latter is crucial for maturity. But what frustrates me most is that the lead never discovers her own self or grows in any way other than to recognize the feelings and talents of others. Hailee Steinfeld nails the teenage rage. Every awkward moment feels like a tiny public execution. Woody Harrelson shows up as the teacher every teenager needs and no teenager deserves. Funny, painful, sharp, and full of enough teenage drama to make adulthood look like a gift. Growing up sucks. At least this movie makes it hilarious. If you watch this for a high school drama / coming of age movie, you will also not be disappointed. Just, in general, you probably won't be disappointed by this one.
