Movie Info

A young girl tries to make sense of her chaotic relationship with her mother in this neo-realistic drama from Russia. A pregnant woman (Yana Troyanova) is arrested by police in the wake of a violent incident, and she suddenly goes into labor. Seven years later, the child (Polina Pluchek) is living with her grandmother while her mom is finishing her prison sentence. The little girl has never met her mother until she appears at the door of grandmother's home; however, mother doesn't seem especially interested in bonding with her daughter, preferring to spend the evening drinking with her new boyfriend. When the suitor tries to assault the woman, the girl responds by clubbing him with a flowerpot, and before long mother moves on. Mother reappears periodically for brief, disinterested visits with the little girl, often filled with verbal abuse, while the daughter wishes her mother was as interested in her as she is in sex and liquor. Desperate for some sort of loving relationship, the girl soon develops an imaginary friend -- the ghost of a boy who haunts a nearby graveyard. Volchok (aka Wolfy) was the first feature film from Vasily Sigarev, who previously distinguished himself directing on the Russian stage.
