This is not a meat pie and gravy offering from the makers of Packed to the Rafters, but a top-drawer period drama with all the trimmings. Go to Full Review

For all its dark dimensions, "A Place to Call Home" is roughly what the title suggests-a captivatingly filmed, deeply romantic drama of immense intelligence distinguished by a uniformly superb cast. Go to Full Review

Bernardine D @BernieDee Nov 30 I've only just watched this series, largely thanks to the Outlander audience who recommended it. David Berry was a draw card. I'm so glad because I found it exceptional. I binge-watched it over a couple of weeks and cried at the ending: a great cast, great storylines for the most part, and endearing characters. It's a must-watch for Australian nostalgia and its handling of complex issues. I was born just before the story ends in Season 6, at the beginning of 1960. But recognised many of the country folk depicted. And I loved the theme of redemption and healing given to so many of the characters. Loved it! See more Sandy R @movieguy1352 04/12/2023 A wonderful story with tremendous ups and downs. Heart warming, tragic, hopeful and exciting. I recommend this to any viewer who enjoys a good story. See more susan j @CallMeLulu 11/07/2020 An attempt at an Australian Downton Abbey, which pivots around the appearance of a gorgeous 40-something-year-old nurse in a manor village and a family of the landed gentry in the Australian countryside (I'd not known there was British-like countryside in Australia--thought it was just outback--but there's no "G'day mate" outback Australian in A Place to Call Home). The show is inoffensive, tho' rather bland, and somewhat predictable in plot, but it's not unenjoyable. Acting, writing, and character development about average. However, it is rife with anachronisms. It's set in the early 1950s--and the anachronisms mostly take the shape of heavy-handed and inaccurate for its time--namely: 21st Century sociopolitical messages concerning social class, LGBT, anti-Semitism, racial prejudice, feminism, etc. Viewers are clobbered hard and incessantly over the head with shriekingly obvious messaging about social issues. The music is also not at all what people of that time and class would even know existed, let alone listen and dance around to. Each episode ends with a cliffhanger so that makes it compelling and you may find yourself bingewatching just to see what happens next. Could have been a wonderful show but it's so thuddingly preachy and dishonest. See more 05/27/2018 SURPRISING, SOAPY, HISTORICAL, GREAT SETS, COSTUMES AND ACTING.
