Critics Consensus

Turning an uncomfortable conceit into an emotionally resonant comedy makes Alice and Steve the best chaotic friends to spend some time with.

This is a delicate premise. But Goodhart and her cast have the sensitivity to make it work. Go to Full Review

Despite its promising start, Alice and Steve is a fizzer, which is such a shame because there are great comedic talents involved. It just doesn’t give them that much to do. Go to Full Review

You’re never quite sure how to watch it: as a suburban satire, or something heavier -- an interrogation of our time of age-gap scepticism? And on the whole, I’d suggest you don’t. Go to Full Review

While the show's got some very funny bits - Alice's sharp-tongued mother is a blast - it's often annoyingly lax. Go to Full Review

…a short, compelling watch, and refreshing to see an older female character depicted with honesty…Alice and Steve’s battle of wills plays out entertainingly in a The War of the Roses series of acts of mutual destruction…. Go to Full Review

Megan M @MeMe76 Jul 7 So far it has been good. Reminds me of Catastrophe in the general awkwardness between family dynamics and humor. Quirky but not everyone will like it. See more Silvia Y @SilviYa500 Jul 6 Very good dark comedy miniseries, highly recommend. Might be one of my top shows of the year so far. See more Olivia M @oliviamhere Jun 30 This show is incredibly painful. The fact that so many see nothing wrong with it is an absolute nightmare as a grooming survivor. I don't know if the cast and crew are truly oblivious to it's issues or are just plain cruel. An absolute mockery. Why do so many people who suffer abuse suffer in silence? It's a mystery. See more Rachael H @RT35175233 Jun 29 It’s quite funny and real which is entertaining but I couldn’t get over the ickiness. He’s 20 years older than her, dated/slept with her mum, has known her closely since she was a child and suddenly he’s really attracted to her and loves her- vise versa? Gross. Genuinely frustrating that Alice is portrayed as rhetorical crazy one. See more Richard B @boredmiddleagedandunhappy Jun 29 Lighthearted and funny, esp if you are married and a 50 something. Don't analyse too deeply - it's supposed to be entetaining comedy; remember this is not a documentary to reflect today's wokey sensibilities. It contains some uncomfortable honesty from and between some characters that many I'm sure can relate to. Fantastic acting from the entire cast (inc. Crosby the Dog and the brutally honest and hilarious grandmother Val) and a very clever and engaging tongue in cheek script about family dysfunction and the difficulties of freindships and navigating relationships. Thankyou, I enjoyed it! See more Colleen T @T-Coo Jun 27 Went in pretty blind, but halfway through and I think it’s great. The creator wrote on the good seasons of Sex Education, so if you like that, you’d probably like this as well. See more Read all reviews
