Season 1
Bad Judge

Critics Consensus

A alleged comedy charged with minimal wit, Bad Judge is benched by stale jokes and a lead performance that lacks conviction.

Tv Season Info

This legal comedy series centers around Rebecca Wright (Kate Walsh), a successful judge with an unusual courtroom manner and wild personal life. Her unorthodox punishments include sentencing a bigamist to attend a feminism course while wearing a shirt that says "I'm a convicted bigamist," a Hollywood starlet to community service at a convent with no cell service and a mom who tackled a young boy during a peewee football game to a beach Christmas. Outside of the court, she pursues a relationship with medical expert Dr. Gary Boyd (Ryan Hansen), only to jeopardize it when she has a one-night stand with a fireman. Most significantly, though, she becomes "counsel" to a young boy whose parents she put in jail.

Critic Reviews for Bad Judge Season 1

This seems like a show exceedingly unlikely to succeed, but it won't be because Walsh isn't funny. It will be because even good shows often suffer from too much tinkering, and not-so-good shows can suffer even more.

Walsh throws herself into the part but Bad Judge so far is falling apart around her. It's not terrible, and maybe not even a misdemeanor offense. But it's still guilty of not being all that good.

Unfortunately, neither Rebecca the character nor Walsh the actress is funny enough to fill the half hour with laughs, or even smiles.

She's fun and funky, nonjudgmentally, the way guys get to be in films by, say, Adam McKay and Will Ferrell, who executive-produce this series.

The judge should throw the book at the show's writers.

Until the show figures out how to make sitcom slapstick and inner-beauty melodrama work, it's kind of a mess. As sitcoms go, Bad Judge adds up more to "Huh?" than "Ha!"

Oct 2, 2014 | Rating: 1/5 | Full Review…

Walsh tries too hard, and the jokes are about as funny as an overtime parking ticket.

I like the jokes that are there already, so let's hope this first season gives us more of them and finds a way to make them matter.

Bad Judge is just all out of order.

Oct 2, 2014 | Full Review…

The show can't really make up its mind about whether Walsh's irresponsible-judge character is someone to emulate or dislike, and in any event, there just aren't many laughs here. Motion denied.

Sex, drinking, and loose ethics in just-OK sitcom.

Painful. That's all I've got for the two episodes I've seen of NBC's Bad Judge.

Audience Reviews for Bad Judge: Season 1

I absolutely love this show. It shows the American Legal system from a comedic point of view, and it does so with a slightly feminist perspective. It comes to light that the main character is in fact a brilliant lawyer, who went on to become a judge. I think this show is funny, cute and witty. Looking forward to a second season!

I really liked this. Characters are good - but the setting is less than believable, but then again it's a comedy.
  • Jan 15, 2015
Would have been better on HBO or Showtime so you could really be a bad judge

This show is funny enough to keep, just sayn.

I'm not normally a comedy fan, and I have to admit, I almost signed this show off. The first episode was a little rocky. I didn't see it holding long term water, but there's been more character development for Walsh's character in 8 episodes than there have been in most of the leading characters in the crime dramas. Chalk one up for the crime comedy. Even if the only crime is sexual harassment in the court room. It's a good laugh right when I need one without being too over the top. Just a dash of human emotion without being too mushy. I wish they had signed for a second season.

What is the world coming to??? Bad Judge only getting an 18% from Rotten Tomatoes and The Flash getting a 96%?!?!? And yes I realize they target different audiences and they are different genres, we are talking quality here. I LOVE sci-fi/fantasy BSSG, Firefly, Gotham, but when a strong cast of actors pull off a funny well written show like Bad Judge and it only gets an 18% something is wrong with the rating system. I am sure anyone, no matter their tastes, that watches the first episodes of The Flash and Bad Judge will have to admit that as far as overall quality (writing, casting, acting, directing, etc) Bad Judge is superior. I watched The Flash and enjoyed it but being an honest person I had to admit, even to myself, it was not of the highest quality. So wether you like Bad Judge or not, I feel the rating system is broken when the scores of the two shows are compared. I highly recommend Bad Judge based on the first three episodes that have aired to date.

Great sitcom. Kate Walsh is very much like a hard-line judge , but in his private life is a little crazy . Tone Bell and Kate make a great partnership.

Getting some traction within the ensemble cast after a couple of episodes, this light fare is easy to sit through. MIsses some opportunities for humor but refreshingly NOT jam-packed with pithy barbs and pranks like ModFam. This might get better with age: Kate Walsh is starting to find her inner-Lucy groove.

Awful show. Horrible and unlikeable characters. Lasted through 5 minutes of the only episode I tried to watch. It will last 6 episodes.

So far I enjoy the show in much the same way "night court" entertained- seems to me this is the direction NBC is going with the show- and all ye critics are missing this point. What with all the fake reality shows and over sensationalized programming that saturates "the air waves" this show is a pleasant treat among the rest of the crap
