See more Michael P @RT60312669 03/23/2025 In Billy, Hirst leans upon the mythic American memory of ‘Billy the Kid’ to build a heroic character, but fails to write the seed of that heroism into the early arc of Blythe’s portrayal. Certainly, we see a young Billy who loves his mother and brother, but Jesse leads that boy quickly down the outlaw path. Surely, Billy is ingenious, but he's hardly heroic—more than anything, Billy seems lost. Worse, Hirst leans into the BTK legend of ‘gun skills’ to offer us Billy’s marksmanship because Blythe gains these skills, it would seem, out of thin air. Never do we see him drawing, shooting, practicing, and gaining technique—but only, suddenly, shooting the head off a snake and bouncing a can around in mid-air with bullets. All of it feels rather unearned. Also unearned is the enchanting charisma that legend attributes to BTK, but that Blythe’s portrayal fails to display. Blythe is a handsome guy and a serviceable actor, but his BTK lacks the passion, moxie, and sparkle of human engagement required to push the needle of his Billy around the gauge of mysterious appeal. Yet, despite their absence, characters react to Blythe as if, indeed, he exhibited these alluring qualities. Thus, led by Jesse, Pat, and Dulcinea’s scripted attraction to Blythe’s Billy, we seek them in Blythe’s portrayal only to our disappointment. It adds to the disconnection I felt in the series. Finally, Season 2 drags, dutifully, through a mire of characterizations and ancillary plot threads that bespeak hours of research into BTK history, but suffice only to slow the drama to a paint-drying pace. See more Peter S @RT78927559 06/20/2024 Season 2 was very disappointing. I found it hard to watch. It was a soap opera really. Very weak , prosaic script with implausibility littered throughout - half a dozen fellas fire at Billie in several scenes from 10 metres away but rarely even a scratch on Billie. The same good luck doesn’t seem to apply to many others. Season one was quite poetic and literary etc. It painted an engaging image of the west, its people and their struggles. Season two lacked imagination. I was actually shocked by how noticeably the quality declined. It was like they ran out of money and time and just hacked the second season together with no real creative direction. Sorry for the negativity but something was not quite right.
