After a seemingly fatal accident at summer camp claims young Jason Voorhees' life, his mother, Pamela, is left grief-stricken. As the town moves on, Pam clings to the hope that her son, whose body was never recovered, may still be alive. The town's chief of police, Levon Brooks, offers comfort and friendship and the two soon grow fond of each other, but Pam's intentions come into question as other dead bodies begin to turn up in the quiet town of Crystal Lake. Levon asks his sister, Briana, a journalist, to dig into these unusual deaths using her resources. What begins as a modest pursuit grows into something far beyond anyone's reckoning. Meanwhile, Pam's dark past comes back to haunt her, forcing her to fight for her very survival and eventually setting off a chain of events that slowly transforms her into the rampaging killer we know from "Friday the 13th."

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Linda Cardellini plays the perfect mom who can do no wrong in this slasher prequel that lives up to the best and worst of its franchise's ilk, but since mother knows best, Crystal Lake is a campy, gory, good time.

Friday the 13th gets a potently scary prequel in eight episodes with a twist on the original twist ending and a knockout Linda Cardellini testing the limits of a mother’s love. Go to Full Review

For all of Linda Cardellini’s efforts, the series is never in danger of getting too real. Go to Full Review

Horror stans might appreciate the fan service (and the staggeringly nasty gore) but for anyone else, the overcomplicated and underpowered Crystal Lake just doesn’t warrant the stay. Go to Full Review

Crystal Lake is an inoffensive expansion of the Friday The 13th franchise that prefers gore over lore. Go to Full Review

When it works, Cardellini permeates the screen with a fierce and furious aura you can’t look away from. Her wrath — vile, wild, and voracious — is both exhilarating and electrifying, even though you’re fully aware of how immoral and rabid it is. Go to Full Review

See more Paul C @paulcesare 2 hrs ago This series got everything you'd expect from a prequel: good writing, character development, homage to the originals and superb acting. It masterfully ties all the "in the air" bits from movies and stich them together and make you go back to the originals with a new vision of the events. Good pace, memorable characters, even the "disposable" ones, many references to the 1980 flick. And the CGI on this one is pretty good, even if it's not the core essential to make it happen. The way Mrs. Voorhees is portrayed gives you the raw animal instinct of survival and revenge at expense of everyone else's See more Theemadmaxx T @theemadmaxx 2 hrs ago Great show not overwhelmingly superb but great and good casting. Good back story 💯 little to much sex scenes maybe it will seem forced for some other than that great great show. Death scenes are good too I really enjoyed the show and lots of drama. Give it a watch See more Tommy T @RT11426294 3 hrs ago I sat down for some slasher nostalgia and ended up binging the entire season in a day. It is impossible to turn off. You never know what is coming; every episode ends on a razor-sharp cliffhanger that keeps you glued to your seat. It shows a side of Friday the 13th never seen before, building a real story with weight that explores the backstory of how Jason truly came about. The production is top-tier. The acting is grounded and intense, with characters you actually care about. The special effects and gore are brutal, polished, and stunning. Combined with period-accurate costumes, eerie woods, and a classic camp setting, it nails that vintage nostalgia without feeling like a gimmick. Anyone rating this low is missing out. You do not even have to be a horror fan to love it, because at its core, it is just fantastic storytelling driven by a compelling mystery. Season 2 cannot get here fast enough!
