What to Know

Critics Consensus

Zoe Kazan imbues her legacy adaptation with delicious moral quandaries and sumptuous landscapes, but it's the expanded character work from Pugh and Lee that brings justice and dignity to this new canon of East of Eden.

Zoe Kazan’s sensational series version of the 1955 film her grandfather Elia Kazan made famous switches the focus from the James Dean son to Florence Pugh’s flamethrower of a mother and suddenly everything old is new again. Go to Full Review

There is not usually a reason to remake a classic. What can modern actors do that James Dean could not? Yet, Zoe Kazan makes her take on "Eden" achingly relevant and vital. Go to Full Review

Zoe Kazan’s departure from John Steinbeck’s treatment of Cathy is welcome, but the series spends too much time explaining cruelty that Florence Pugh makes compelling enough. Go to Full Review

Finely acted, the ambitious and largely faithful period drama really gets into the characterisation from the novel, while also immersing viewers into its self-righteous world. Go to Full Review

Paul D @LVHothead 28 min ago I challenge anyone to read Steinbeck’s original novel and tell me that it needs reshaping or any major changes. It was an almost perfect book. Going against my better judgement, I watched this series, but it left me cold. There is not one likable character in this version, and the main focus is on a person who I did not care about or cheer for. Note to Zoe Kazan: Just because you can do something doesn’t mean that you should do it. See more Ply 3 @YourNameIsJeff 2 hrs ago Just like all Netflix shows, could have been a movie. But also, very boring. I wasn't disappointed. The nuances of the story that Kazan achieves in the first 10 minutes had my rapt attention so I was up until 2am binging the first 4 episodes. Pugh is nothing short of miraculous and right there with her are Abbott and Faist. The skill of Abbott in playing a deeply hurt man who projects everything he lacks onto a woman who literally crawls onto his porch half dead, is mesmerizing, confusing and deeply sad. Faist as well, who would be content to live out his life with his brother compelled into mediocrity by his step-father, is fascinating to watch. Cirian Hinds is 'perfection' in his wise approach to counsel and understanding of the human condition, no matter how dark and hopeless. Hoon Lee is also remarkable in the double life he created to survive in a white world and its expectations of him.
