Hank: Season 1 (2009)

Season 1

Critics Consensus

Kelsey Grammar's comedic gifts are wasted on Hank, a mix of unfunny gags and schmaltz that too often feels like a rehashed sitcom from the early 1980s.

For those expecting another Frasier-like comic tour-de-force, disappointment looms ahead.

Hardly any of this works well.

It's lazy, predictable and spectacularly tone-deaf.

The jokes, the laugh track, and the performances seem more like throwback to 1980s sitcoms.

It's a slight premise, and the odds of it morphing into a fresh, lively weekly adventure feel about the same. Slight.

This isn't only Frasier, recast as a standard family sitcom. It's Green Acres.

Hank is not only unoriginal, it features some of the most annoying things I've seen on a sitcom in a long time.

Although the idea of losing everything and starting over isn't usually very funny, Grammer's trademark quick and intelligent banter makes the show entertaining.

The script for Hank (by Tucker Cawley) plays like something out of the early '90s, as if this is what Grammer turned down post-Cheers and somebody pulled it off the turnaround shelf and dusted it off.

Not a single wisecrack got a laugh other than from the studio audience.
