Harlots is, from the beginning, a lovingly researched, beautifully filmed, and superbly acted soap opera.

It's proto-feminism hidden inside corsets and ribboned shoes.

It is a kind of corrective. But still vigorously, disconcertingly bawdy. Highly recommended as unsettling, adult entertainment.

[Harlots] is certainly audacious. And ambitious. But whether it will be able to pull off it's fine-line feminist balancing act remains to be seen; this show may end up groundbreaking or it may end up a train wreck. In the meantime it's hard to look away.

Luckily, the show has Samantha Morton for its Margaret. She effortlessly holds the center, calculating and unguarded by turns. There is, as always, power in her silences, but she's aware that subtlety will only get you so far in a show called Harlots.

The show cheekily explores lots of topics, from the tension between religion and sex to the patriarchal power of a culture where men could plan their trips to the brothels right in front of their wives.

Harlots is fantastic story-telling and shows viewers a view of sex work through the eyes of women...This is a show about the female experience in a culture and system that is set in favor of the men...

Much as the show walks the line between decadent and trashy, so does the storytelling, which can be faint and engrossing in equal measure.

The single most refreshing aspect of Harlots is its inclusion of black people in Georgian England.

With elaborate costume design from Edward K. Gibson, and enough drama to keep viewers intrigued, you won't want to miss the first season of this provocative drama.

You just know it will end in tears, but whose we do not know. We may be too busy sniggering to notice.

From Harlots one could expect a drama of the time with more tango-like overtones, but it manages to navigate in sordid and complex themes in an entertaining way. [Full Review in Spanish]

On the surface, it's a show about sex... But in truth, this is a show about power, about female ambition, and the ways in which women risk themselves in order to survive.

The back and forth struggle between the two actresses is very satisfying, although it is a little hard to keep track of all the characters in both houses.

Harlots is a jaw-dropping drama that won't give you easy answers or trite comforts, though it will take you on an emotional ride through the ups and downs of being a sex worker (of any status) in 18th century England.

Sex work makes for good TV. It involves money, passion, an element of secrecy, and a unique way of conceptualizing one of humanity's most natural impulses. Yet, as great as Harlots is, its depictions are fictional.

Harlots is fascinating to watch and the development of its characters, especially that of Margaret Wells, provides an addictive and binge worthy television experience.

It's like a breath of fresh air.
August 30, 2017
It never quite comes together so you can believe it, and it's improbably glossy.

Harlots ... presents the world's saddest profession with a pragmatism that allows for moments of humor and hopefulness while never forgetting the sex trade's base in degradation.
March 29, 2017
This is the TV equivalent of what English people of a certain age like to refer to as a "marmalade dropper:" a story so shocking that you spill jam off your toast.
March 29, 2017
Harlots is unsparing and sympathetic, able to find humor in its characters' romps and compassion for the profession's tragedies.
March 29, 2017
Harlots mostly pulls off a tricky balance of substance and tone. It's infinitely more jocular than...The Girlfriend Experience... but no less thoughtful when it comes to the dynamics of sex and power.
March 29, 2017
Shocking and fascinating, Harlots will keep you watching not for the sex and nudity but for the women trying not to sell their souls along with their bodies.
