In the 17th season of this crime drama, Benson (Mariska Hargitay) is promoted to lieutenant and takes command of the squad, but she doesn't get to choose who will be her second-in-command. Instead, Deputy Chief Williams Dodds decides to put his son Mike Dodds (Andy Karl) in that position. Benson also enters into a new relationship in her personal life when she begins dating Lt. Ed Tucker (Robert John Burke). Meanwhile, Rollins (Kelli Giddish) experiences some big changes in her personal life as well when she becomes pregnant and gives birth to a baby girl. Guest stars this season include Whoopi Goldberg as an overwhelmed Department of Child Services supervisor; Chris Elliott as an unscrupulous crew member on a reality show; and Brad Garrett as a corrections officer who abuses his power.

It's all about who people think you are and who you really are and the reconciliation of those, often opposing, views. The exploration of that this season on SVU will make for some very interesting television for sure.

There's something comforting about knowing exactly how the hour will proceed. Then, once in a while, SVU breaks the mold and instead delivers a creepy, weird story. Law & Order: SVU Season 17 Episode 1 is one of those times.
